EMN Game Day

So our local store runs two game day events each new set. The one on Saturday is a full rounds tournament with a cut to Top 8 and has the usual play mat, promos, and payouts based on attendance. The Sunday event is free and only pays out the playmat and promos typical of game day. On Saturday I played GW Tokens and did well but did not secure the play mat. I decided to have fun with the Sunday event and not worry about winning, so here’s what I played:

EMN Plans

So I went to the SCG Open in Columbus this past weekend. Generally, playing control decks during the first weekend / big event of a new Standard (even with nothing rotating out) is difficult because you cannot tune your answers to the exact threats present in the meta. For me, though, I’ve been playing BW Control almost exclusively for the past 6 months and didn’t feel comfortable playing something new. I knew spirits and humans would be all over the place (Bant Company and White Weenies) so I adjusted my BW Control list to have more instant-speed removal (in the form of Murder) and tried to retain the ability to answer enemy planeswalkers. I also added two Oath of Liliana because, when cast on curve, it’s pretty crazy. Below I’ll cover the changes I made and what my plans are for EMN (even though my plans are odd). Continue reading

Trisk: A Deck, A Phobia

I’ll have some updates on my BW Control list and how it has performed lately in a post sometime this week, but first we need to talk about something important. In just under two weeks FNM will occur on Friday the 13th. I think it is critically important to play a Triskaidekaphobia-based deck on that night. This post will address my “all in on flavor” attempt at a decklist. Read on if you’re brave enough (and don’t actually suffer from Triskaidekaphobia). Continue reading

[SOI] BW Control Decklist Update

So I haven’t had much time to critically test the BW Control deck I posted a while back. I’ve been playing on XMage and have made a decent amount of changes to the deck. I’ve taken a new deck list to my most recent FNM and plan to take it again to this week’s FNM. First off I’ll post the new deck list, then highlight why I made the changes, and then I’ll summarize my mediocre performance at FNM and why I’m not terribly worried about it. Continue reading

BW Control/Midrange in SOI Standard

For the last month or so I have had a lot of fun playing a BW Control deck based around Jeff Hoogland’s list. While I find the deck to be very fun to pilot I never had huge amounts of success with it. It also never fell flat, though, which made me consider continuing to tune it once Standard rotated to include Shadows Over Innistrad. I was originally worried that losing tools like Sorin, Solemn Visitor, Utter End, Seeker of the Way, and Murderous Cut would be too much for the deck and that it wouldn’t survive rotation. I’m now thinking that I was very, very wrong. Continue reading
